On Wednesday, 25 October, Silicon Cape will host a unique event featuring six local companies disrupting their respective sectors, ranging from road freight transport to real estate. The event will also feature Marlon Parker, founder of the Reconstructed Living Lab (RLabs), a social enterprise that has been replicated in 23 countries, and that has impacted more than 9.2 million people globally.
Under the theme ‘Disruption Can Come from Anywhere’, the evening will take place at Workshop17 in the Watershed at the V&A Waterfront, and starting promptly at 6pm. Like the companies presenting, the event will be fast-paced with five minute presentations from each of the startups, two panel discussions and an insightful talk by Marlon Parker.
“Disruption is about restoring trust where it has been broken, simplifying complexity, introducing transparency, and removing costly intermediaries to find more efficiencies,” says Ellen Fischat, MD of Silicon Cape. “We’re thrilled to offer such a diverse lineup of local startups shaking up their respective sectors.”
Supported by CapeTalk radio of Primedia Broadcasting, Chivas Regal, whose Chivas Venture competition – a $1 million fund that finds and supports social entrepreneurs around the world – and Tapsnapp, an online platform that makes it easy to find and book professional photographers, the event is co-presented by Atmosphere Communications, a national consultancy specialising in integrated brand and corporate communications.

Marlon Parker is the founder of the Reconstructed Living Lab (RLabs), a social enterprise that has been replicated in 23 countries, impacting more than 9.2 million people. Marlon is an alumnus of President Obama’s Young African Leaders initiative, an Ashoka Fellow, a WEF Young Global Leader, a Dangote Fellow, and has been listed as one of the 100 World-Class South Africans in 2013 and 2014. Co-founder of JamiiX (the backbone to one of the largest mobile chat counseling networks in the world), he was the Lead SA Hero of 2015 and this year, was listed by Quartz as one of the top African Innovators.
About the participating startups
Linebooker is an online bidding platform that connects road freight transporters and transport customers, as part of offering transparent pricing and end-to-end transport management. They cut out transport brokers and admin hassles.
PropertyFox is South Africa’s first smart online property seller, offering an efficient, transparent, safe and cost-effective sales solution as an alternative to traditional estate agents in order to save sellers on commission fees.
i-pay is an online payment processor that allows users to make instant, secure, electronic payments straight into any South African bank account. They cut out credit card companies.
HeyJude is the world’s first virtual assistant service app backed by humans, assisted by Artificial Intelligence. They cut out time wasted on admin.
iDrop offers water – purified by nano-purification technology provided to grocery store owners – that is sold in refillable containers to make water more available, affordable and safe in vulnerable communities. They cut out beverage companies and support local entrepreneurship. They are the South African finalists in the 2017 The Venture, an international competition for social entrepreneurs launched by Chivas.
Jumpin Rides is South Africa’s safest and cheapest carpooling platform for drivers and passengers. It offers an alternative to public transport and potentially the need to buy a car.
