Woman of the Week: Tamzin Martin
Tamzin tell our readers a little about yourself and what you do?
I have two very busy kids, Amber, 9 years old who is fast approaching geekville, wonder who she takes after *wink*. Her favourite
website is www.honeyzweb.com.
Joel, 6 years old, is a sportsman in the making, definitely Daddy’s
genes. Talking about daddy, hubby dearest, the anchor in my life and
the one that keeps me focused.
What do I do? mmm lots. I am an account executive at an exhibition company at present and I do research for TV shows. Social media has
become addictive, so I spend quite a bit of time tweeting, doing status
updates, researching social media sites and blogging.
Stress free days: I enjoy baking and love being outdoors.
Has technology changed your life in any way?
Definitely!!! It’s so much easier to connect with people. Distance is no excuse not to engage in business as the technology tools
available allow meetings and transactions to take place on a virtual
platform. Just a few examples of change: bank visits vs online banking,
traditional marketing methods vs social media marketing, searching for
information – available at the click of a button, correspondence- snail
mail vs email, sms, chat tools.
Take us through a typical day in your life.
One word – whirlwind! Juggling a day job, working on a new venture, maintaining my social media sites, school runs, extra-murals and my
“to-do” list. There isn’t a day that is less than busy, but it’s all
good and when you doing things that you are passionate about it makes
it enjoyable and worth it.
What are your current projects?
BizXnet is my company which has just been registered. Our mission is to expose SMME companies to the best possible network creating support
structures and B2B leads with a strong focus on social media; and to
provide a forum for education and collaboration on social media
technology, platforms and strategies while providing a conduit for
communication and coordination between SMME companies. I am preparing a
few projects which would empower individuals with more skills to
approach the job market or even choose the path of entrepreneurship.
Why do you Blog?
Those who do know me will know I have a condition called verbal diarrhoea J , and in January this year I figured that blogging is a
perfect tool for me to express myself. It’s a motivational blog and has
impacted people’s lives positively, and has done the same for me. I
often get messages from people telling me that my post has encouraged
them and what a great feeling when you know that you have touched
someone’s life for the better.
What is the best gadget you ever played with?
Haven’t had an opportunity to explore any of the high end gadgets, however I find touch screen phones entertaining. I still prefer the
keypads and if I must say so myself have mastered speedy fingers and
can even text without looking at my keypad.
What social media tools do you use?
Google – email, gtalk, documents, search, Skype, Facebook, Twitter, Mxit, LinkedIn, Nimbuzz, E Buddy. WordPress. The top 3 for me has got to be google, facebook and twitter
How many hours do you spend on the Internet?
Oh dear, am I going to regret going public with this? Easily between 16 and 20 hours per day.
I couldn’t imagine life without it. I have always said that severe punishment for me would be to remove any online access, which would lead to major withdrawal symptoms.
What advice would you give to a newbie starting out ?
Keep the vibe alive. Your passion will drive you, but can sometimes let you down too. Stay focused. Be a sponge, absorb everything you can.
Choose a reputable mentor. Surround yourself with people that will
contribute to your life. Don’t be afraid of technology, it is there to
be embraced. If at first you don’t succeed, try again. Enjoy the
journey. J
What are your top 5 favourite websites?
Only 5? Ok, here goes…
Where do you look when you need a little inspiration?
My inspiration comes from above. God has done wonders in my life and I trust Him in all situations.
So what can we expect from you in 2010 and beyond?
I am very excited about my new venture, BizXnet. It’s a start-up company and needs lots of attention.
The projects will launch in 2011 and I hope to have the privilege then to be featured on shesthegeek as a follow-up. ![]()
