The Silicon Cape Initiative steering committee community voting process begins - Please VOTE!

As the interim steering committee and founders of the Silicon Cape Initiative, it has always been our intention to hand this initiative over to the community which makes it up. Without the community, there is nothing, and it is impossible to act and engage on a community's behalf without a firm mandate.

Thus, we are pleased to announce the commencement of the community voting process for the new official steering committee, whose mandate will be to carry the vision and work of the… Continue

First Silicon Cape networking function

While the nominations and voting process for the new community steering committee is underway, the founders, as the (tiny) interim steering committee, have gotten together with some volunteers to keep the momentum going by arranging the first Silicon Cape networking event.

The idea is to aim for a monthly regular meet-up to facilitate interaction across all sectors within the community, and to hear short keynote addresses from people involved in living the Silicon Cape… Continue

The Silicon Cape Initiative launch event a huge success!

Thank you to all who volunteered, sponsored, organised, spoke, blogged, tweeted, and attended. Your support was invaluable and overwhelming. I think there is no one present who didn't walk away feeling inspired, motivated, and uplifted by what proved to be a momentous occasion, which was bursting at the seams with well over 500 people in attendance.

We were all a part of "an historic, landmark day in SA history" according to several speakers yesterday. Here's hoping that the momentum… Continue

The Silicon Cape launch event - follow it online!

Tomorrow's event is bursting at the seams, with nearly 500 people expected to arrive at the Rotunda in Camps Bay, and an incredible array of speakers and participants. Due to the heavy oversubscription for the event, we have had to close the guest list and waiting list.

To those of you who can't make it, Juliet Pitman and Ivo Vegter will be live blogging the event right here on this site. You can also follow Pam Sykes' live tweets on the day on Twitter via… Continue

Nominate your committee for The Silicon Cape Foundation

Just a reminder to please submit your nominations to nominations@siliconcape.com for the 10 steering committee positions. As we've said before, this is a community movement, for the community, and by the community. To that end, we, the interim steering committee, must now hand this initiative over.

After the launch event next week on October the 8th, a community vote will take place to decide the steering committee based on the people you nominate, and the interim steering committee… Continue

Welcome to the Silicon Cape Initiative!

I hope that you will join us in being a part of the conversations that ultimately turn the vision into reality.

When my good friend Vinny Lingham and I spent a few weeks together in Silicon Valley in early 2009, we quickly realised that we shared a passion for the idea that the Cape in South Africa had the potential to become the Silicon Valley of Africa. This led to many a late night discussion filled with… Continue
