Doing freelance work while working a 9 – 5 job holds two benefits. First, it diversifies your income stream. You no longer have a single salary to pay your bills. Even if your company downsizes and you are affected by a company wide retrenchment, the side income softens the blow. Secondly, freelancing for clients is the best way to show off your skills and impress potential employers. You will be able to get the word out, establish a client base, build a fabulous portfolio and set your own…

On Wed at the Siliconcape event Jacqui Buchanan from Silicon Valley and South Africa spoke about the great work done by S'Africans in the USA.
http://www.saabc.orgI found this multimedia competition link on their site:
http://zooppa.com/contests/south-africa. Looks like there's about $20,000 in prizes to be won: "Get Wildly Creative about South Africa" runs until 24 May 2010.

I was impressed by the turnout at the networking event on Wednesday and enjoyed the MC, the guest speakers and the 60 second pitches.
All good except for a very confusing comment by Brett from Invenfin. How can you justify a comment along the lines of.... .. "if it hasn't been done before , it is a problem and if it has been done before, it is a problem" You lost a few of us here but thanks for all the other interesting observations and useful advice.
Thanks to…

Silicon Cape was great and quite an eye opener. For so long I felt so alone in my journey to bring better connectivity to the townships and its people, and help the women to earn enough to feed and educate their kids. I met so many people that feels exactly the way I feel, and its great to get support or even a word of encouragement from someone. We can certainly do with more networking events in Cape Town like this. Thanks for the platform to meet like minded people and get some fantastic…
