Exploit Customers and Employees at Your Own Peril

I always try to convey to my MBA students that a strong focus on customers and employees are the holy grail in the search for sustainable business success.  Should one research the vision statements and credo’s of businesses, they all (the most of them in any case) make the point that their people are their most important asset, and that they live to make their customers happy.  Forgive my cynicism!

Allow me to elaborate.

In the world of business, one can Google the…

Poken Lessons from #SiliconCape

I confess. I love Poken and I am really not entirely objective, but here are some of our preliminary thoughts about the introduction of POKEN to a few hundred friendly Silicon Cape members at the recent event. W00t!  We have only had positive feedback so far - and a few product use queries...

CellC embraced the small #poken as an add-on at the event.…

Social Networking Event

I went for my first Silicon Cape networking event! It was amazing, I didn't quite understand the Poken gift when I arrived but soon found the importance and began to appreciate that little thing!!! I love my Poken was the first thing I said after updating my online profile.

The networking event was amazing except for a few glitches that saw our chance at delivering an elevator dim down to darkness. But luckily the event was very well-managed and even though there were a few…

Silicon Cape Initiative Plays Host to Mobile 2.0 Product Launch by Cell C (Sparkpr was there! )

The Sparkpr Cape Town team attended the first Silicon Cape event for 2011. Founders of Silicon Cape, Vinny Lingham and Justin Stanford, are two South African high-tech entrepreneurs who observed that South Africa, and in particular the Cape, is in a similar position to where Silicon Valley was 15 years ago. This led them to create the Silicon Cape Initiative, that serves to bring together local and…

Tools of the Social Tribe and Trade - Poken being 1

I hope to be joining the SiliconCape event tomorrow after a talk elsewhere. Unfortunate clash of interests and responsibilities - especially since POKEN will make its big Cape Town appearance at the event. I also have a poken and am really excited about the potential of this simple, yet amazing USB tool (manufactured in Switzerland) to keep people connected. …

What is iGen Tribe all about?

The world shifted in 1982.

Machine of the Year, 1983

That was the year Time magazine named the Personal Computer as “Machine of the Year”. Computers, the Internet, and more lately, cellphones have had an irreversible effect on the next generation. People born after 1982 have experienced…

14 Business Lessons from Golf

Golf is a game I love.  I am not good at it, but I love the game.  It helps me to relax.  It also helps me to size up other people.  You cannot hide personality defects on a golf course consistently.  My point of departure is that you play against yourself and that you need to enjoy it.  From a business / management perspective, I identified a number of points in golf that business managers can take heed of, whether you play the game or not.

Silicon Cape Event Elevator pitches

During the events there will be a couple of interesting speakers, but to make it a little more interactive we open the floor up to YOU, the entrepreneurs. 6 - 10 entrepreneurs will be given the opportunity to shake some stealth by pitching their business and ideas to the audience. The audience will vote for their favorite and a prize will be handed over along with everlasting fame.

The idea behind the elevator pitch is:  "You get into an elevator in a big firm and, lo and…

I am practically finished my Business Science Degree, however have to finish 2 courses to complete it.

I was wondering if people are looking for help during the start-up process of their businesses, as I would be glad to get involved in different types of businesses for the exposure to the field and experience in the business environment.

An Ode to the Principal

I was driving to an appointment with a good friend of mine who used to be a principal.  I was also contemplating asking him to do a presentation at a conference on leadership, culture, and values in April.  As soon as the idea came up in my mind, I also asked myself how I could motivate why I am asking a principal to talk at a leadership conference where businessmen are the target audience.  Some of you who remember the Chris de Burgh song, Patricia, will remember the words: “The facts of…

Specialised Postgraduate Employability Skills Project

As with any skill, employability skills can be learned and enhanced. Vocational Graduates needs employability skills, not only in SA but in Africa as such. More and more studies shows that graduates from vocational training institutions do not have sufficient life skills, which are more and more considered to determine "employability".

Spatial Information Association for Southern Africa (SIASA) , a registered NPO, will be embarking on this journey with University of Limpopo,…

The 4 promises that iGen needs to keep in 2011

A lot of iGens return to work this week, so it seems the perfect time for us as iGen Tribe to start empowering our generation. Now is an appropriate time to think about the year ahead of us, and especially what we want to accomplish as a generation. For those of you who don’t know, an iGen is a young person who grew up in a world where technology became ubiquitous. (Roughly, those born between 1985 and 1995).

If you are of this generation (or on the fringes of it), think about your… Continue
