Chew UNDERGROUND issue - LIVE fresh off the Web

From the Team: Against the backdrop of dull commercial work, designers are seeking new ways to express themselves (just ask us at Chew, which was created from this ethos). The result is a fusion of pop-up stores mixed with street scene apparel designs, underground e-zines and project spaces (let’s think Co-Op, a collaboration between DOKTER AND MISSES and WHATIFTHEWORLD in association with OPEN). The aim of these non-traditional platforms is to give new and emerging creatives the chance to…See More

So What is Chew?

Sharing inspiration for a new generation, Chew magazine is the first wholly online magazine in South Africa that serves to showcase the work of talented creatives from South Africa and abroad on a global, digital platform. Chew magazine is aimed at a new generation of people who are searching for, want to be a part of and collaborate on an edgy, smart, underground and highly graphic online publication that showcases the freshest talent in fashion, photography, typography, illustration, design, art, writing, film, music and more. As a contributions-based magazine, Chew magazine challenges the traditional perception of magazines and magazine design and, in so doing, pushes the boundaries of creativity and expression. Individuals both locally and internationally have the opportunity to showcase their ideas, inspiration and work – whether visual, verbal or interactive – and have them published in a high quality, freely available, cutting-edge digital magazine to a diverse audience of subscribers around the world. This allows for experimentation, exploration, collaboration and above all, the opportunity to have fun: making this a magazine for the people, by the people.

At the end of 2009, Chew's online shop www.bitestore.com was launched with a limited edition designer Tee range.

Benetton 'It's MY time' campaign

What a clever campaign this is. In the age of everything social and interactive and the very prominent 'don't tell us what we want, we'll tell you' attitude of our generation, Benetton have gone and created a global casting competition. Gone are the stereotypical catwalk cliches and model attitudes.

Entrants create a profile, upload movies and photos and get people to vote for them. Why? Because the 100 highest voted entries get… Continue

Have you heard of Design Thinking?

I attended an event that was posted on the Silicon Cape website yesterday that included a chat by a professor from d.school. The event was jam-packed (I was sitting on the receptionist's desk outside in the passage leaning my head into the doorway) but it was completely fascinating to hear what these guys were doing at the d.school… Continue
