Hi Samantha-Leigh

Good luck on this front, having some personal experiences of my own in this field, my first advice - seek offshore for your prospective VC as a first port of call. Most of the local players are "bankers" rather than venturers (depending on where in the lifecycle your business is at) - and can suffer from very poor domain understanding in certain areas. This makes it near impossible for them to assess your potential business value attributes. This does depend on your busines plan and target market approach of course. Best of luck out there!

Most of you would have seen this in the FM - but in case you missed it, there is the URL:http://www.fm.co.za/Article.aspx?id=126502. Featuring prominantly, is "our" Justin Stanford. Not that it gives any particular cles to accessing capital but the article has elements that maybe should be included in the narrative of how risky VC is compared to other investments. I can almost guarantee losing new money in the JSE for the next little while...The Bond or money markets? with QE2, competitive devaluations, deflation/inflation/stagflation who knows?.. A sound start-up, well executed starting to look like an investment for granny's portfolio!!

It is definitely a tough time for start-ups wanting VC. I was chatting to a mate of mine / former colleague who is a director of a VC firm which has been around for almost 10 years and they aren't actively raising capital for anyone currently. Quite a few VC firms have realigned their vision and are moving into Wealth Management as a means to stay profitable until the projects and the markets gain momentum again. Just keep in the mind, financial markets are like most things, they work in cycles. For people who do have capital to invest, now is a great time to get in as there's big upswing potential taking hold - it's just a case of when. For new start-ups: Back yourself, back your ideas and be patient until the time is right.

Hopefully this will prove to be a vibrant group, especially since I am likely to be drinking at the VC trough (again!) in the next couple of years.
