The Silicon Cape Initiative

This is my first discussion here and hit a stumbling block. I have to unique projects that we have been working on for sometime now and have been actively looking for investors. Yes, we know the economic situation is not in our favor but there has to be genuine investors out there and not so-called "investors" who claim they have the money and try and steer you in another direction or others that just want your idea.

The one project is ready for Beta testing in January, ready for launch in February is a Business Social Buying and Selling Network - no there are not many out there and yes, it has been researched, planned and strategized. But to find investors to launch nationally is a nightmare. Yes, we can launch without investment but to have it will make the launch that much sweeter ..

Then the other project is we have found a gap in the search engine market .. in actualality, it will be direct competition to Google and yes it is an awe-inspiring concept and will change the face of the internet market but to find an investor to come on board, again is a nightmare ..

Does anybody know of geniune investor or investors that have the capital to invest that will understand these types of projects? We have everything from business plans to presentations, to the projects itself...

Do you know of anybody? Can you help a Cape Town based company to be part of this Silicon Citit and can help to luanch Silicon Citi .. these projects are a fantastic foundation on which to build...

If you have anyone in mind, please email me at aubrey@trinitydesigns.co.za or contact me on my cell 076 105 0559 ..

Check out www.angelhub.co.za Its South Africa's first Angel Network. Its got genuine angels that have already done deals.

Hi Aubrey, why not try out Silicon Cape's VC Office Hours for some feedback on your projects and presentation.

Hi Shaun, Thanks for the reply. It is a nightmare trying to find Angel Investors. Jack Dorsey of Twitter approached an investment company with just a drawing of his idea, on a piece of paper and raised $22 million investment, created in 2006 and now has reached $4 billion. I have full business plans, and working products and it is so difficult to find that person or company that is not out to poach your idea, that will actually see it for what its worth and to partner ... I am certainly pulling my hair out, after so many meetings. Is this contact you talking about on this website www.siliconcape.com or is this something else (Silicon Cape's VC Office Hours). Thanking you once again.

Hi Aubrey,

The VC office hours is in the Resources section under Other useful links. The benefit of VC Hours would be to help you identify what's missing from your presentation and help you improve the pitch. It is free.

Just remember that for all the frogs you are kissing, the angel investors are doing the same. They kiss about 300 frog-ventures for every prince-venture they back. As much as you want an investor, they would love better deal flow.

Have you tried VC4Africa.biz where you can list your project as a venture; a mix between an angel network and crowdsourcing. I have made a couple of very good contacts through VC4Africa.

Cheers

Shaun

P.S. You could also check out Martin Soorjoo at Investor Pitch Clinic he has a bunch of useful stuff. Find him on LinkedIn.

Progress can be difficult. It is often a matter of finding the right investor, which might happen on the first try or on the 300th try. The recommendations above are top notch. As another thought, and depending on what your products are, you may find some backing in less traditional places. For instance, Google started at Stanford University in the United States. It ran on Stanford servers for some time before becoming its own company. Maybe you can work out a deal for something similar. It would give your product exposure at a low cost to you, which would attract investment if all goes well. Then you could treat the university as an investor and give a percentage of the company to them in return. They may bite if the project could also be used to train their students and you would have a pool of potential (already trained) employees.
