The Silicon Cape Initiative

Hi Everyone,

I launched my website 3 months ago and WOW have I learned a lot!!!

Here are some tips I can offer anyone who is looking to do the same thing.

1)  Do your Research - Your idea is probably already out there - FACT. That does not mean that you can't peruse your idea, you just have to do it better than anyone else. Take an example of a competitors site, sit down and say, if I owned this site, how would I make it better. As a customer you are more likely to see the problems as well as opportunities facing the site. Take these notes and do it better!

2) Building Traffic Will Take Time - Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither will your traffic. You have to get out there and bring traffic to your site. Give your users a reason to return as well. Constantly adding new content to your site will keep users happy and peak Google's Interest. GOOGLE, now that a big one. The best way to drive traffic to your site is through organic traffic (the results that appear in the search results down the middle of the page) but this takes time - a lot of time. In order for a pages on your site to even get indexed my Google (by their googlebots) the content on your site has to be relevant and consistent. If a page on your site is about Rainbows, then make sure the word "Rainbow" appears in the "Title Tag", "Description Tag", "Keyword Tag" and in the actual body text of the page (where a human can read it). Also, put of picture of a Rainbow on the page, but importantly, make sure the "ALT Tag" of the picture states "Rainbow" as Google cant figure out what the picture is of without that. All these things help with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and will help grow your traffic.

3) Market Your Site - Sitting back with the best site in the world will get you nowhere! Unless you market your site, your dead in the water. Adwords is a great place to start as it is a fairly simple system to learn. Adwords = paid for traffic. You type in Rainbow, my ad appears, you click on it, I pay Google for your traffic. (Google wouldn't be the Juggernaut it is today if this didn't work) If you are looking to start a website and don't know how adwords work, start reading now!

These are just a few of the things I have learned in the past 3 months and I am by no means a guru at this! I am leaning constantly and just thought I would share a few simple tips I wish someone had told me.

I am however please to announce that i have received 52 Company and 116 Product Listings, 1193 Unique Visitors and 6060 Page Views since I started my Adwords Campaign 16 days ago.

Check out my site and let me know what you think?

I'm still playing around the site but so far think its a great proposition. Will need to create a large directory to make it a one-stop hub for users trying to locate products. Will get more feedback after I click around more. Love the intro video - how did you get that in?

Thanks for the advise as well. Recently launched a site and the advise is very relevant. Thank you.

All the best!

Hi Kyle

I went through the same experience. I'd like to add to point 3) Market your site. Google Adwords can become costly, since you are competing against other established companies for the top spot (they have bigger budgets). A solid SEO implementation on your website will greatly improve your position on the search results page along with Social Media Marketing.

I had a look at your website, browsed around and registered, it's fairly straight forward and easy to use. All the best!

Thanks for your Response,

@Tatenda - Thats definitely the goal ;) The video was created by a company called VSP World Wide (http://www.videospokespeople.com) Great Service! They completed the video shoot and coding in 1 day.

@ Chantal - Thanks for your input. I am currently working on the SEO side of things. Lots of work but definitely worth the sweat and tears. Thanks for registering on the site. Very well priced laptops you have. You should look at listing some of the other products you have ;)

All the best to the both of you as well!

Kyle, I'll add some more;)

During the product upload, I wasn't sure if the 'Desription' field allowed for HTML tags. So I left it out...and there is no WYSIWYG editor.

I'm just interested to know for next time, if I can use HTML tags.

C.

Hi Chantal.

Sorry for the late reply.

Certain HTML tags can be inserted into Description field (eg. <strong>) so you are more then welcome to experiment and create the best look for your products.

I am also in the process of including a WYSIWYG editor that will assist inexperienced users create the same effect.

Thanks again for your input into the site. It is greatly appreciated.

All the best, Kyle.
