The Silicon Cape Initiative

Interesting, if somewhat downbeat view of the Hollywood film financing machine - the increased demand for local productions everywhere in the world is seen as one of the threats. In general terms, the piece provides some encouragement for bold movie making with good storylines.

What I like about the industry is that the world is now waking up to the idea of financing movies. The old model of Production risk - Distribution risk seem destined to be only the realm of the very large budget movies.

Hi Philip - yes, I am optimistic about potential prospects of this industry as well.  New distribution models, the small screen (TV) and the ever increasing demand for content, even if serving niche interests, created by increased number of TV channels and of course the internet.  The relative poor performance of certain investments made by private inverstors (like property) may prompt a re-think of how to deploy capital.  There are several worthwhile incentives, tax breaks and co-production agreements already in place. But what is needed is to move away from the "once-off's" and develop a film financing industry that allows investors to take a portfolio view on several or a series of productions.  Despite its problems, it is easy to invest in property, the banks have special property divisions, lawyers have specialist conveyencing divisions, estate agents punt property every week and several JSE listed vehicles provide an opportunity to invest in property stock companies.  The opportunity is there. What we need is to develop critical mass and draw in more investors

one of the new models for financing films  is to add story idea + cause + team + financing (based more on cause) and mix in (but not rely on a broadcaster) - the broadcaster needs to become the platform not the financier - the link above is the result of a similar (not exactly) model where we partnered with some micro financer's to make a film - we are looking for VC's who want to play in this area - thanks for raising the interesting point
