The Silicon Cape Initiative

After September 11, 2001 most of the airplanes in the world were grounded.
It was a logistical nightmare, cos they did not have space to put them all down.
The stats came out that 80% of all ATC (airline transfer craft) are in the air 90% of the time. What does this have to do with Video? Well, should a R100 000 camera work two days of the week. H*** no! Considering that it becomes redundant within two years, you want to earn back 5 times its value before the technology expires. But how?

I Suspect that some of the rental agencies “help” some private cameras to “work more”.

Three things that I would love to see happen in our industry is that there is 1- more standardization, 2- co-operation in competition and 3- a sort of a union for video producers.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. This has been happening overseas more dramatically than here in S.A.

A colleague of mine James Mathers, president and co-founder of The Digital Cinema Society pointed out to me last week that there are so many Red One rigs in L.A. that owner/operators are giving their cameras away for free just to get a job.

This is only going to get worse the cheaper the technology becomes.

Our industry could benefit a lot from some unions, not just for video producers, but for scriptwriters, crew etc..., also co-operation in competition is going to become key. Those who co-operate will help each other to survive, those that don't will be strangled by ever shrinking profit margins.
