The next SPIN event on the 19th of October is dedicated to discussing tools that support Agile development. (There is probably space for one more panelist , so please contact me if you're interested.)

Hi All

Things are moving a pace for the first Bootstrappers Braai . We now have a venue that we will finalize soon.

We need people to volunteer for the following roles
We require some help with the following:

Master of Heraldry: Someone to help design a funky logo
Master Gunner: Someone to help invite people and just create general awareness
Quarter Master: Someone to manage the booty
Boatswain: This person will help manage the stores and setting up functions
Sailing Master: Responsible for the Bootstrapper Braai Group/Blog and who polls attendees on changes/additions to the event
Again the main aim is to hold an informal social event for people starting companies/ involved with start ups or keen to start them.

I’m thrilled to announce that international expert on Kanban for software development David Anderson will be in Cape Town from 4-12 February 2010 to conduct a series of events focussed on Kanban Software Development.

David is credited with the first implementation of a kanban process for software development in 2005. David was a founder of the agile movement through his involvement in the creation of Feature Driven Development and continues to be a thought leader in the Agile space. The full programme, which will be run at the BMW Pavilion Conference Centre in the Waterfront, comprises:

2-day class: A Kanban System for Software Engineering (1 & 2 Feb)

If you want to learn how to implement a Kanban system in your organisation, this course is for you. It is full of case studies and practical exercises that will help you to get started when you return to work. There is no pre-requisite Agile knowledge for this course. The cost is R8000 (excluding VAT). Only 30 places are available.

1- Day Seminar: Management Success with Common Sense Application of Agile and Lean (3 Feb)

If you are a function manager in a technology organization, director, vice president, head of department or senior executive seeking to understand where to leverage more from your technology investment then this seminar is for you. If you are mystified by Lean and Agile jargon but wonder that there might be value to be found if only you could unlock it then this seminar is also for you. The cost is R2000 (excluding VAT). 3-day Kanban Coaching Workshop (5-7 Feb)

@phpslacker - Yeah, interesting conversation, although I think we may be drifting OT :)

The team I am on will be getting a junior dev in a couple of weeks. Low on experience and skills. The challenge being to mould the dev into a skilled agile dev without the training/mentoring process becoming a drag on the rest of the team.

This of course, presupposes that I have a good idea of what being a skilled agile dev entails (many days I am not so sure :) ).

I know I want to give him a proper grounding in the red/green/refactor school of TDD/BDD - not sure what else though (other than some obvious grounding in the languages required).

Am currently reading the pragmatic programmer and I think I will reread "Practices of an Agile Developer" in search of inspiration!

I think the experience that you detailed below, is one that many senior devs struggle with - I am not sure if all of them reach the conclusion that you do though!

I'll admit i once gave up on juniors. They seemed to s*** up all my energy and waste much of their own time. I swore i'd never hire another junior again

That experience helped me to realize that juniors are juniors. They're supposed to get it wrong more often than not. They're supposed to annoy more senior or expert team members with mucky code. The frustration i felt in not getting what i wanted out of juniors was a #fail on my part not theirs

Reading about the Dreyfus model in the latest Andy Hunt book helped me to understand juniors. More so, it helped me to understand the behaviour of ppl at various skill levels (in various crafts). Its a real *ahh* moment. At least for me
