How could we as a nation, have allowed FIFA to host the soccer world cup on our own turf and not make opportunities available to ICT companies in South Africa. Small businesses in ICT can do a lot to create jobs and stimulate economic growth in SA. What lessons can we learn from this unfortunate incidence in order to guard against a repetition in future?
Have tried unsuccessfully to register as an ICT vendor for quite a while now, and finally got through to SEDA a few weeks ago, and was told I should have registered 6 months ago. Have got FIFA LOC names and tel numbers, as well as Telkom contacts by the dozens from phone calls made since Dec.
Telkom National call centre and networking divisions? Can tell you a few horror stories about trying to help international companies here for the WC to get ADSL lines... Which includes stadiums not actually getting fast internet at all. I hope for the sake of the Royal Bafokeng stadium that they have a decent connection inside the stadium.
Thanks, rant for the day.
Lessons learnt: From SME side: 1. Start early. 2. Go and knock on doors physically as Govt don't pick up their phones. From Govt side: Provide the channels of communication and BROADCAST them.
I feel your pain...when you hear my story, you'll appreciate why I started the discussion. ICT Start-Ups in SA are still neck deep in trouble. The question is, how do we deal with this situation? Never mind answering because there's no solution, not with the present crop of leaders we have.
