Event Description

Startup Weekends are 2 day events where developers, designers, marketers, product managers, entrepreneurs and startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch a startup!

Startup Weekends are weekend-long, hands-on experiences where entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs can find out if startup ideas are viable.  On average, half of Startup Weekend’s attendees have technical backgrounds, the other half have business backgrounds.

Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees are encouraged to bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. Over Saturday and Sunday teams design and develop business plans while constantly streamlining their startup vision.  On Sunday evening teams demo their prototypes, listen to judges’ feedback and win prizes.

Startup Weekends are specifically designed for people who want to learn more about becoming an entrepreneur, people interested in receiving feedback on an idea, looking for a business partner, or who want to learn a new skill. We also welcome anyone looking to test the entrepreneurial waters.  Startup Weekends are risk-free environments where everyone is expected to roll up their sleeves and dive into the exhilarating world of startups

There is a minimal cover charge for the weekend of R500 per attendee - this covers things like wireless internet, 5 meals and refreshments and the Startup Weekend facilitator that has to be flown in from the USA.

The event organisers are all volunteers and will in no way benefit financially from this event.

This is the first Startup Weekend event that has been held in Sub-Saharan Africa and the third in the continent.

I can't wait for the weekend.

I got involved with one of the Startup Sessions in JHB and it's good to see the team bring the same idea to Cape Town. LEts hope the name and the supporting crew including the mentors and VCs bring a bigger crows though because the session I attended in JHB was very small.

An impressive group of VCs and Startup experts getting involved as Judges, Speakers and Mentors - looks like it's going to be a great weekend!

Thanks Julian for offering a student discount. From talking to some students, they're considering attending a lot more seriously. I hope that turns into them actually going, cause I think this is an amazing opportunity. Good luck with the final prep!

If the success of SW in other countries is anything to go by I'm definitely in. More people should be interested in this which will make the buying decision less of a consideration. I'll be following who Might Attend more closely and make a call closer to the time. I'm also a student so budget sensitive and have some Masters work to do very close to this event.
