Silicon Cape members are invited to apply to attend TEDxJohannesburg!
TEDxJohannesburg is an independently organised, non-profit TED event aimed at spreading great ideas that will help uplift communities. Carefully selected speakers and audience members will be given the opportunity to hear inspiring, new ideas and to interact and engage with each other, sharing their own "ideas worth spreading".
Past TED events in Monterey, California, have had both big name speakers such as Al Gore, Richard Branson, Bill Clinton and Bill Gates, as well as relative unknowns with exceptional ideas, such as Jill Taylor and her stroke of insight, Hans Rosling and his statistics, Janine Benyus, who demonstrated how nature's 4.5 billion years of R&D offers so much to those trying to solve engineering problems; and Jeff Han, who showed us all how to make technology more accessible to the whole world by using US$40 Nintendo Wii remotes to create cheap digital whiteboards. Check out their website www.ted.com and download some of the talks.
We, at TEDxJohannesburg, with our chosen theme of “Uplifting Communities”, aim to recreate some of the essence of what has made the many TED events over the years as exceptional as they have been, both as an experience for those who have participated and also for what impact they have had on the world, long after each event has finished.
Our audience is as carefully selected as our speakers - passionate TED enthusiasts, many of whom are entrepreneurs and who are in various ways involved in uplifting communities, sometimes in very innovative ways – like Silicon Cape. Our goal is to set the stage for people to know what others are doing, to create a space to interact and to open both doors and minds in the hope that we can, in our own way, “make things happen”.
We have approved 15 speakers and you can view them on www.tedxjohannesburg.co.za/speakers. We are covering diverse topics ranging from “How earth worms save the world”, Vitality for the poor, from taxi hand signs and visual communication, to bio-mimicry to skateboarding initiatives for jobless youths in Uganda, from a kid’s roundabout that pumps clean water for rural communities to spontaneous music performance, blogs, speed poetry and technology trends and hacking the telecoms system. It should be an awesome event!
To Apply to Attend: go to www.tedxjohannesburg.co.za . Click on Register. Register and fill in your Attendee Application. All attendees need to be approved on the system, that is why it is important that you at least partially fill out the Attendee Application. Silicon Cape Members have priority in the selection process.
